Excellent GCSE and A Level results at Harris Academy Bermondsey

Students are celebrating at Harris Academy Bermondsey after gaining outstanding GCSE and A Level results this summer, including achieving their best ever GCSE results .

The academy saw a 10 percentage point increase in its EBacc score at GCSE (A*- C or 4 and above in the core academic subjects) which increased from 38% in 2016 to 48.8% this year, significantly above the national average of 23%.

In addition, 21 girls achieved the new ‘super grade ’of  9 in English Literature which at 11.7% of students is over three times the expected national average of 3%.  4 girls made the double getting a grade 9 in both English Language and English Literature.

Ten students achieved the top grades A/A* (or 7 and above) in ten or more subjects and our top 30 students all achieved 8 or more A/A* (or 7 and above).

Harris Academy Bermondsey’s Principal, Gillian Hodgson, said:

“Our students should be so proud of themselves. Harris Academy Bermondsey has had an awesome year and its best EBacc results ever.

“ Even using the tougher ‘strong pass’ level of 5 for English and Mathematics,  Harris Academy Bermondsey has seen an improvement on last year's EBacc measure. These truly are our best results ever.

“All our girls have the opportunity to study the EBacc core academic subjects alongside creative subjects. Today’s results show an outstanding breadth of academic achievement. In the first year of the new 1-9 grading system, it is especially pleasing to see so many of our students excelling and achieving the very top grades.

At A level, Harris Academy Bermondsey celebrated a 100% pass rate across all subjects with over half of the grades achieved by students at A*-B.

BermondseyALevelEmmaHopeTamarThere were also a number of notable individual successes, including Tamar from Southwark (pictured, right), who gained an A*, an A and a B in History, English and Biology. After following the Pathways to Law programme, she will be the first in her family to go to university. She will now study Law at the University of Warwick.

She said: “I was really happy with my results but shocked too!”

Tamar puts her excellent grades down to the support she got from teachers, as well as her own hard work. “They mark every piece of work really thoroughly and support you for as long as you need,” she said.

Hope (pictured, centre) achieved an A*, and two Bs in English, History and Sociology and will now study either Sociology at Warwick or History and Sociology at Sheffield.

“Our teachers would make us keep working until our work was really good which meant that sometimes we’d be there until 6 in the evening,” said Hope, who wants to go into social policy.

Emma (pictured, left), who achieved an A in English and a C in Sociology as well as a Distinction Star in BTEC Business Extended Diploma, is now set to study Sociology and Social Psychology at York. She attributes her success to her own hard work and that of the teachers too: “We did it together.”

The girls were featured holding their results in the Southwark News.

On results day at HAB, each student is given their results individually so they can discuss them with teachers and assess their options.

“We don’t want students just to collect their results and go away,” said Lyndsay Harris, Head of Sixth Form. “That’s why we’re here for them, to help them decide their next step, to go out into the world with confidence and good advice.”

She added: “Half of all grades were A*-B which is a very strong performance and we’re delighted for them.”

Asked what advice she’d give younger students who were looking to do well, Tamar said: “Don’t compare yourself to other people because it can take time to get into your stride at A Level. But persevere and you’ll get where you want to go.”

Hope had some good advice too: “Get off your phone and start revising early.”
