John David Blake

History Consultant and Leading Practitioner

"I joined the Harris Federation in June 2015, as one of two History Consultants and Leading Practitioners."

It’s a diverse role, including everything from writing lesson resources, through curriculum planning, lesson observation, teacher training, reviewing data and facilitating the exchange of best practice between schools, working with every secondary History department across the Federation.

We’re very lucky that virtually everyone who teaches History in a Harris Academy is an historian themselves, so there is a huge wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw on.

Our job is to help Harris History teachers in whatever way we can to focus on the teaching and learning they enjoy, using the power of the network of Harris academies to benefit everyone. For example, a lot of my time since I started has been spent on building a common assessment framework for History in Key Stage 3, so that History Heads of Department have accurate comparative data for these year groups now that National Curriculum Levels have been removed, and we can collectively work out what the appropriate standard for History students in different years ought to be. Because we’re very committed to every department having the freedom to choose the curriculum that works for them and their students, that has meant a lot of work so the framework is flexible but also useful. That combination of co-operation and diversity is very important to making the Harris History network function.

I joined Harris having served as a Head of History and as an Assistant Headteacher – this role combines the strong subject focus of a departmental head with the more strategic aspects of senior leadership. Working across the different schools within the Federation is great: they all share an absolute commitment to every child achieving their best, but each also has a very individual ethos built by the Principals and their teams. Seeing how different teams pursue the same goals is fascinating, and ensuring that our work contributes positively to all the schools is challenging and invigorating.

One of the big attractions of working for Harris is the other staff: working with deeply committed and highly motivated teachers, middle and senior leaders both in schools and in the central team, initial teacher educators, and support staff helps me reflect on and improve my own work, as well as fostering a positive and solutions-focussed culture where good ideas can make a massive difference to students’ outcomes.
