Why I do What I do: Shea Williams

As part of our "Why I do What I do" series, we spoke with Shea Williams, a former student of both Harris Academy South Norwood and Harris Westminster Sixth Form, whose journey to the University of Cambridge is an example of determination and perseverance. Having her heart set on studying Human Social and Political Science (HSPS) at Cambridge University, she faced several challenges along the journey to securing a place.

Journey to Cambridge

To accomplish her long-standing ambition, Shea needed to achieve A Level results of A*AA. The journey began promisingly with impressive GCSE results. However, contending with the challenges of Covid-19 and an unrelated period of ill health during Year 12, led to mock exam results of ABBC. Unfortunately, this informed a set of predicted grades that did not meet the University’s entrance criteria. Instead of giving up, re-evaluating her situation, she decided to postpone applying to Cambridge and applied to other universities, focusing on revision to improve her performance and surpass her predicted grades.

During her gap year, Shea spent time visiting several European countries, participating in youth projects. She also delivered anti-racism and migration training to teaching professionals from across the UK as part of an internship. The dedication, and time out of education, paid off when Shea received an outstanding 2 A* and 2 As in August 2021. On results day, she made a bold decision: Shea declined all other offers, including those from other Russell Group universities, and submitted her Cambridge application during the gap year. In January 2022, she received an unconditional offer from Cambridge.

Impact of Harris

Shea values her time at both Harris South Norwood and Harris Westminster Sixth Form immensely. South Norwood offered a close-knit community amongst the Harris schools, with memorable events like the Federation-wide sports days at Crystal Palace. Those experiences hold a special place in her heart and highlight the strength of the Harris community.

At Harris Westminster Sixth Form, Shea found an educational structure that helped to prepare her for the standards expected from Cambridge University. She particularly valued the student support network; even during her gap year, former teachers assisted her by reviewing applications and providing guidance throughout the Cambridge application process.

Looking to the Future

Shea's impact extends beyond her academic journey. With over six years of experience in facilitation, social media management, public speaking, and campaigning, she has actively worked to create a safer and more transparent environment for young people in education and adult life. Her involvement in organisations like The UK Youth Parliament and her three-year tenure as Young Deputy Mayor for Croydon, highlight her commitment to helping make a difference in the lives of young people.

We can't wait to see what Shea does next! Her determination and passion for making a difference are bound to lead to more amazing things ahead.
