Why I do What I do: Maddie Henson

Maddie Henson, a former student of Harris City Academy Crystal Palace, now serves as a Community Outreach Officer dedicated to improving the lives of young people across the capital. She is also a local councillor and previously held the position of Mayor of Croydon, providing leadership during the incredibly difficult period of COVID-19. Maddie explained that while her political and charity work is her life passion, her family is integral to her motivation. It was a pleasure to hear about the inspiring and impactful journey that Maddie has been on since her time at Harris.

Can you tell me a bit about your time at Harris?

My connection with Harris dates back to 1999 when I attended Harris Academy Crystal Palace. During my time there, I witnessed the school's transformation into a Harris Academy, and the positive changes driven by its progressive leadership.

While at Harris, I noticed a lack of support and understanding in society for some of the challenges my peers were facing. I realised that the school, much like society at the time, was grappling with these issues. However, I felt that changes in my community were not happening quickly enough, which ultimately led me to pursue a career in politics.

How did you look to affect change?

I wear multiple hats. As a Community Outreach Officer at 4in1, I work with 400 London-based organizations to improve the lives of children in poverty. I am also a local councillor, providing a voice for my community.

Why does Harris Futures matter?

It's important to share experiences, opportunities, and advice, and Harris Futures is a great way to do that. I spoke to students at HCACP in 2021, as part of my role as mayor, which I really enjoyed.

"I have always been driven above all else by a desire to help people. As a teenager, I often supported friends to work through difficulties."
