Harris Federation conference for 4,000 staff
For the first time since before the pandemic, all 4,000 Harris Federation teachers and support staff have come together for an amazing day of training and workshops – many thanks to all the speakers who helped make the day so useful and inspiring.
The theme of the day was the Confident Self-reliance that defines the Harris Federation.
At the heart of our approach is, obviously, our commitment to children, their education and the diverse, often needy communities we serve in London and its surrounding areas.
But likewise, we believe we embody the spirit of London: a city of entrepreneurs, inventors, relationship-builders, newcomers, the establishment, diversity and generations of economic immobility. But all driven by the desire to get on with life and do things for themselves. This concept of Confident Self-reliance has driven so much of what we do as a Federation. Over more than thirty years we have identified opportunities and challenges in education and in the wider socio-economic needs of the families who attend our schools – and have just got on with dealing with them.
As a Federation, we don’t wait for government, for influencers, for opinion formers or for anyone else to sort out what needs sorting. We have the confidence and drive to do it ourselves. We are delighted to partner with others in doing so but we, as a Federation, and the spirit we seek to inculcate in our students want to stand on our own two feet. To lead where others follow. To open the doors for ourselves that we can then walk through with pride. And not to waste any moment or opportunity in doing the right thing; whether that’s in terms of direct classroom practice, creating opportunities for our young people, training our staff or addressing the obstacles faced by our colleagues and communities; housing, food, travel, university, the most skilled, the most needy, the least represented, the most challenged. Whoever they are and whatever they face, if they are part of London and our Federation, our mission is to help them.
Confidently self-reliant, we are London.
