Harris Experience Year 9 Introduction to Art History with Christie's
How do we define what constitutes art? What is art history? What makes it a valuable field of study? On the 4th of February, Harris Experience students joined a call delivered by the Education and Outreach team at Christie's Auction House to explore these kinds of questions. With knowledge gained from her long career in one pre-eminent art institutions in the world, our speaker Jacqui Ansell took Y9 Harris Experience students through periods of art history ranging from prehistoric cave drawings to the current landscape of AI-generated or technologically created images. Students saw examples of key periods of art history throughout the year, such as Impressionism, Art Nouveau, Renaissance and Baroque. They demonstrated their understanding by engaging in a group analysis activity for a painting of Henry VIII, identifying key symbols and techniques Holbein had used. We are immensely grateful to Christie's for sharing their expertise with our students and inspiring them to think about the art world in more depth. In May we will visit their auction house in central London, and we couldn't be more excited!
