Y10 Harris Scholars - The Brilliant Club
On Wednesday the 26th of March, Harris Academy Bermondsey kindly hosted the bright Year 10 Harris Scholars cohort for an excellent session with The Brilliant Club - a charity that works to improve university access. We first heard from four Year 12 HAB students who explained the benefits of staying at Harris for sixth form, and answered questions relating to GCSEs and A levels.
We were really lucky to have three PhD students who gave excellent mini-lectures on their field of study in relation to 'Why Innovation Matters', our theme for the day. It was extremely interesting to learn about how different fields interconnect; we had an engineer, a cancer biologist, and a medieval manuscript specialist who gave insightful presentations with plenty of talking points.
Finally, the Harris Experience team led a session on politics with a particular focus on democracy and why young people should vote. Our aim was not just to lecture them on politics, but to teach them how to think and approach new topics. That said, we were impressed with the vast amount of knowledge the students already had. We were also keen for students to participate, and their initial shyness soon dissipated as every student got involved in discussions.
We look forward to seeing the Year 10 Harris Scholars on July the 8th.
